April 1st 2026

April 1, 2026 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Join us on April 1, 2026, as we welcome Avard Woolaver to the Sackville Photography Club for a fascinating evening dedicated to social landscape photography—a genre that quietly captures the relationship between people and the spaces they inhabit.

Social landscape photography sits at the intersection of documentary and fine art. It explores the human-altered environment—street corners, signage, parked cars, utility poles, aging storefronts—and invites us to consider how our everyday surroundings reflect culture, change, and community. It’s not about staged scenes or dramatic edits, but about observing the subtle, often overlooked beauty and meaning in the ordinary.

Avard, a Nova Scotia-based photographer with over 40 years of experience, has spent his career documenting these quiet moments. Deeply influenced by the New Topographics movement and inspired by photographers like Robert Frank and Lee Friedlander, his work reflects a strong sense of place, memory, and time. Avard’s photography has been exhibited internationally—from Paris to China—and his extensive Toronto archive is preserved in the City of Toronto Archives, now home to more than 1,100 of his images.

His recent projects—Toronto Now and Then and Dartmouth Now and Then—use comparison photography to explore how urban environments evolve across decades, revealing stories of change, continuity, and identity.

Avard’s presentation will offer a thoughtful look at the power of everyday scenes and how to approach photography with curiosity, patience, and a keen eye for the details that others might miss.

If you love street photography, documentary work, or are simply curious about how to capture meaning in the mundane—this is one event you won’t want to miss!
