SUMMARY:Natural Light Portrait Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever looked at a beautiful portrait and thought\, “I’d love to try that… but I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing”? Then this workshop is for you! \nJoin us on October 4th from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM for a fun\, hands-on afternoon exploring the art of Natural Light Portraits. No experience is necessary\, and you don’t need fancy equipment. Bring whatever camera you have\, bring your curiosity\, and we’ll figure out the rest together. \nWe’ll cover everything from working with your subject and helping them pose naturally\, to finding the best expressions\, choosing backgrounds\, spotting distracting elements\, and improving your composition. We’ll also explore how to work with the light you have\, how to modify or improve it\, what types of light can work best for portraits\, and what camera settings you might want to try. \nMost importantly\, this is a chance to get out from behind the camera and actually practice. You’ll have the opportunity to experiment\, ask questions\, learn from other SPC photographers\, and receive in-person guidance and mentoring along the way. \nWhether you’ve never photographed a portrait before\, you’re looking to build your confidence\, or you’ve been doing this for years and want to try something different\, come join us! There’s no pressure to create a masterpiece. We’re here to learn\, experiment\, make photographs\, and hopefully have a few laughs along the way. \nThe location will be decided by the members attending the event. \nBring your camera. Bring your questions. Bring your willingness to experiment. DESCRIPTION:What happens when you stop trying to capture a landscape exactly as you see it? \nFor our next SPC general meeting\, we’re excited to welcome Nicholas Bent\, a Canadian contemporary fine art photographer with an incredible 40-year career behind the camera. Nicholas is best known for his haunting and ethereal landscape and tree photography\, using intentional camera movement (ICM) and distortion to transform familiar scenes into impressionistic and abstract works of art. \nThis is a chance to step outside the usual rules of photography and look at landscapes in a completely different way. Instead of worrying about keeping everything perfectly sharp and perfectly still\, Nicholas explores movement\, abstraction\, mood\, and emotion to create images that feel almost dreamlike. \nWhether you’ve experimented with ICM before or the idea of deliberately moving your camera while taking a photograph sounds completely wrong\, this should be a fascinating evening. Come with an open mind\, bring your questions\, and be prepared to see what happens when blur isn’t a mistake — it’s the point. \nYou may even leave the meeting looking at the trees around you a little differently. Just try not to explain to anyone why you’re suddenly waving your camera around while taking pictures. They already think photographers are weird enough. \nThis meeting is open to members of the Sackville Photography Club. DESCRIPTION:A landscape isn’t just a place. It’s a way of seeing. \nFor our next meeting\, we’re pleased to welcome Richard Robesco\, a visual artist whose work spans photography and painting\, creating images that range from realistic landscapes to highly stylized and abstract interpretations. \nRichard’s approach to photography goes beyond simply capturing what’s in front of the camera. His work combines classical visual traditions with contemporary ideas\, with a strong focus on both content and form. His photographs invite us to look more closely at the world around us—and to think about what we’re actually trying to say when we make an image. \nWhile landscape photography is one of his areas of focus\, Richard’s subject matter is anything but limited. His work includes landscapes\, street scenes\, portraits\, still life and transposed images\, often exploring minimalist\, monochrome\, peaceful and contemplative styles. He’s also not afraid to experiment\, allowing the photograph to become something more than a literal representation of the scene. \nDuring this presentation\, Richard will share his approach to landscape photography and the creative process behind his work. We’ll explore how composition\, light\, simplicity\, perspective and artistic intent can change the way we experience a landscape—and how we can move beyond simply asking “Is this a good photograph?” to asking “What am I trying to say with this photograph?” \nInspired by contemporary artists including German painter Gerhard Richter and Düsseldorf School photographer Andreas Gursky\, Richard brings an artistic perspective that challenges us to look at familiar subjects in unfamiliar ways. \nRichard has exhibited extensively through solo and group exhibitions across Canada and is a regular exhibitor at the annual Contact Photography Festival in Toronto. His work has also been featured in books\, print publications and online magazines. \nWhether you’re an experienced landscape photographer or someone who simply enjoys pointing a camera at a really nice view\, this promises to be an evening of inspiration\, creativity and perhaps a few new ways of looking at the world through your lens. \n\nThis meeting is open to members of the Sackville Photography Club. You found the Develop module\, moved a few sliders around\, and—hopefully—didn’t accidentally turn your photo into something that belongs on the cover of a 1980s heavy metal album. \nNow it’s time to get a little more powerful. \nJoin SPC President Shawn Wyrozub for Lightroom 201\, a virtual mentoring session focused on one of the most useful tools in Lightroom Classic: Masking. \nMasking gives you the ability to make targeted adjustments to specific parts of your photograph instead of changing the entire image. Want to brighten your subject without blowing out the sky? Darken the background? Bring out detail in the clouds? Make a face stand out? Fix a distracting area without affecting everything around it? \nThat’s where masking comes in. \nDuring this session\, we’ll dive into: \n\nUnderstanding what masking actually does\nSubject and Sky masks\nSelecting people and specific parts of a person\nBrush masks\nLinear and Radial Gradients\nColour and Luminance Range masks\nAdding and subtracting from masks\nCombining different masking tools\nRefining masks for more precise adjustments\nUsing masks to direct the viewer’s eye\nReal-world examples of how masking can transform an image\n\nWe’ll focus on why and when you’d use each tool\, not just where to find the buttons. You’ve even figured out that the big round thing on the front is important. \nBut then someone asks\, “What lens are you using?” \nAnd suddenly there are numbers\, letters\, mounts\, focal lengths\, apertures\, f-stops and enough abbreviations to make your eyes cross. \nWelcome to Lens 101! \nIn this online mentoring session\, we’ll take a beginner-friendly look at the wonderful—and occasionally confusing—world of camera lenses. We’ll cover the basics of focal length\, aperture\, f-stops\, lens mounts\, zoom vs. prime lenses\, and what all those numbers and letters actually mean. \nEver wondered what an f-stop actually is? Or what E-Mount means? Not sure whether you need a 35mm\, 50mm\, 85mm\, 24-70mm or 70-200mm? And why does every photographer seem to own a 24-70mm anyway? \nWe’ll tackle those questions and more\, including which lens to use for different types of photography and how your choice of lens can change the look and feel of your photographs. \nThis session is designed for beginners\, so you don’t need to know your f/2.8 from your f/22. In fact\, if you currently look at lens specifications and think “Yep… those are definitely numbers\,” you’re exactly where you need to be. \nAnd yes\, there will be a few jokes. Because apparently we can’t discuss lenses without talking about f-stops\, focal points and getting a little too close. \nThe goal isn’t to turn you into an optical engineer. You exported the photo. \nBut did you know your photo has been quietly carrying around a whole bunch of information about itself the entire time? \nWelcome to Metadata 101! \nIn this beginner-friendly online mentoring session\, we’ll take a look at the mysterious world of photo metadata and explain what all those fields\, numbers and acronyms actually mean. \nEver wondered “What in the world is EXIF data?” Or why your camera seems to know exactly what lens you used\, what shutter speed you chose and precisely when you pressed the button? \nWe’ll talk about EXIF data\, IPTC metadata\, copyright information\, titles\, captions\, descriptions and keywords—including the eternal question: \n“How many keywords is too many keywords?” \nAnd just when you think you’ve got it figured out… \n“Wait… how many fields are there?” \nWe’ll also look at why metadata matters\, what information you should consider adding to your photographs\, how metadata can help organize and find your images\, and how it can be useful when sharing or publishing your work. \nThis session is designed for beginners\, so don’t worry if you’ve never opened the metadata panel in Lightroom and thought\, “I’m going to pretend I didn’t see that.” We’ll take it one piece at a time and make the whole thing a lot less intimidating. \nThere may even be a few moments where you discover your camera has been keeping better records than you have. \nThe goal is simple: understand what metadata is\, know what information is useful\, and learn how to use it without developing a sudden urge to throw your computer out the window. \nThe session will be held via Zoom and is open exclusively to current members of the Sackville Photography Club. \nBring your questions\, bring your curiosity\, and bring your photographs.
